What’s the Future of Search?
Isn’t there something just inherently ‘Internet-y’ in speculating about what the future will bring? Personally, I always enjoy chatting with smart web-savvy internet folks about where we are headed with ‘this’ or ‘that’ in the future.
At SMX Advanced in Seattle this year I asked Rebecca Lieb about what she is reading in the tea leaves insofar as search is concerned. Here are a few key concepts I considered the big takeaways from the discussion.
Social Media:
Rebecca believes we are going to see search engines spend a lot of time and effort developing ways to integrate social and behavioral data into search. We all know about Google’s appetite for data. Most people even on the periphery of the industry have a really good idea (and a nagging worry?) about how much data Google has about our search behavior.
What about Facebook? What about Twitter? Facebook goes a little different direction than what your behavior is, they know more than what we do... they know what we like. They know this because we tell them. We tell them our favorite colors, our favorite bands and where we like to go on vacation.
We tell Twitter about ourselves too, but most importantly with Twitter, we tell them what we are doing ‘right now’. Think a search engine wouldn’t be interested in knowing what you are doing ‘right now’ when you are doing a search? Maybe?
Feeling Lucky?
If you can get past the slightly creepy aspects of this concept, the upside of it all is that we will probably have better search engines. All of this data we are feeding the machines about ourselves is going to make the machines exponentially better at interpreting what we ‘mean’ when we type in a query. Pretty soon, who knows? They may know more about what we want than we do. Won’t that be nice? Instead of typing queries into search bars, we can just request optimal instructions. Be a big time saver... Gives the 'Feeling Lucky' button a whole other slant too, doesn't it?
There’s an App for That:
Rebecca seems to be of the opinion that search, particularly mobile search, might slip through the fingers of the giant aggregators like Google and Bing. She believes we are going to see an uptake in usage and mobile search marketshare going to specialized search apps like Urban Spoon.
There may still be 3 or 4 of you out there thinking ‘meh, mobile search’ but pay attention to the part in the video where Rebecca points out that “30% of Google search in Japan is coming from mobile search”. That’s a lot of search. Think that % is going to go down? Clearly I can’t speak for everybody, but personally, I think this smartphone thing might have some legs to it.
Say Hello to your Customer:
SmileyAnother memorable Rebecca quote (well praraphrase at least) from the video is; “people are really realizing that monitoring reputation management is more and more a part of search”.
As social media data makes it’s way into search engines, companies better have a good idea about the potential impact - good and bad - they may be looking at when ALL of their customers have the potential to air their opinions.
The guy that bought the ‘XL Blue Beach Widget’ last week and left a 3 page rant about how bad it sucked and how horrible your company was to deal with, could more and more find his way to the top of search results for your ‘XL Blue Beach Widgets’. What happens if your ‘XL Blue Beach Widgets’ normally make up 30% of your seasonal spring internet sales? That could get ugly. Say hello to your customer. If they wave, wave back.
Search, as Rebecca points out is becoming more and more of a 2 way street. Your clients are informing your market strategies already now more than they ever have. This influence is only going to grow. If you are thinking about your Search strategy and have another group in your organization working on your Social strategy.... you guys need to hang out more. A lot more. Go to lunch, have drinks after work, become room mates (if you are management, consider handcuffing these people together) - whatever it takes. Social and search get a little closer every day. If search is vital to your business, then social is vital to your business, you may just not know it yet... But it’s coming.

3 Reasons Google Analytics Fails for SEO
#1 - Limitations of Technology
The first trouble is that Google Analytics uses what is called “page tagging technology”. Without getting too deep on this, it is important that we understand this one fact. That is, the program is only capable of recording information on browsers that execute JavaScript.
Automated browsers (including all spiders like Googlebot, Yahoo! Slurp, MSNBot, etc.) never execute JavaScript in your source code. So, while Google Analytics may do a great job of tracking your human visitors, they’re unable to give you the goods on spider behavior.
In order to make the most of your SEO efforts you need to know when a spider is coming in, what pages they’re requesting, and how often they’ll come back. Using this information is how you can launch and optimize new pages, set up the best internal links and prioritize your source code changes.
While it sounds strange, I would go so far as to say that tracking spiders is just as important as tracking your visitors.
#2 — No Support for Log Files
I’ve met many novice SEOs who rely solely on Google Analytics. While it makes me wonder how much they are actually doing for their clients, I urge them to begin using log file analyzers.
Log file analysis opposes page tagging when it comes to the technologies behind web analytics. Tools that rely on log files are using hard coded server logs to mine all information. Every request for a file on your site is recorded, along with an IP address, user agent, and in most cases — the referral string. While it can be a bit more work to use these applications — the data you get back makes it a necessary evil.
The best part about log analysis is in the filters you can build. I know the Google Analytics tries to address this to some degree but it’s lacking at best in the control that you have.
Sadly, Google Analytics will not allow you to upload log files (or, retrieve them via FTP/HTTP) as other applications do. If they could build this feature in, it would be a win-win situation. You could use GA to track all of your data — and so could Google!
#3 — You’re at Google’s Mercy!
When you need to check reports, you access them online via the Google Analytics interface. The reports cannot easily be taken with you, and you have no way of archiving your data efficiently.
Worse still, is that Google retains control over your data at all times. If they change the interface or style of reporting, you are stuck with having to deal with what they give you.
If we’re talking about YOUR web site, YOUR visitors and YOUR analytics… Why should Google have all the power?
Before thinking that the product is complete too, leave the analysis to experts in web analytics. According to Matt Durgin’s blog, Forrester Research was less than thrilled by GA…
Google Analytics was reviewed, but ranked far below the commercial solutions — further back than Urchin (whom Google acquired and re-branded as Google Analytics) ever ranked behind its competitors. This could be evidence that Google will not devote the resources to keep up with the commercial solutions on the market. If this trend continues, look for a larger discrepancy between the “free” Google Analytics, and the commercial, professional tools on the market.
Recommendations
In the end, Google Analytics is not a useless tool. It is however a tool that does not address the needs of serious search marketers. If you’re looking to make the most of your time spent on analytics, do yourself the favor of using multiple tools.
Generally speaking, Google Webmaster Tools should provide accurate data for your site and how Google related to it. So should Yahoo’s Site Explorer.
At the end of the day though, you’ll need a solid log file analyzer to learn more. Here are three recommendations I can stand behind:

Search Engine Optimization for Newbies
Search Engine Optimization for Newbies
With so much information - and misinformation - available on the topic of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) it can be tricky trying to separate fact from fiction.
Coupled with the fact that SEO changes only slightly less rapidly than the weather, it can be downright overwhelming to know where to start.
So, if you're an SEO newbie looking for a place to start, here's a look at some Search Engine Optimization (SEO) basics. What Is SEO?
Even the most beautifully-designed site won't do you much good if potential customers can't find it. That's where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes in: SEO helps ensure your site is more visible in the search engines, drive qualified traffic to your website, and convert that traffic into actual customers.
In short, SEO increases your website's rankings in the search engines by making the pages within your site more attractive to the search engines. The more attractive your site is to Google, the higher its rankings in the search engine results pages. And the higher your rankings, the more likely users will visit your site. Obviously, a site with a result on Page 1 of Google is going to get more traffic than a site buried on Page 14.
If your site is missing from the top search results, then you may not be maximizing your ability to generate new business and add revenue to your bottom line. Let's take a look at some stats:
* 1.3 billion Internet users
* Over 85% start at a search engine
* Less than 25% will go beyond the top 10 search engine results
* Top 10 results get 80% more traffic than those ranked in the 11-30 spots
Besides gaining better rankings in the search engines, SEO is effective in several other areas as well:
* Branding/establishment as an authority
* Pre-qualified lead generation
* Easily tracked ROI
* Cost savings compared to other mediums such as glossy brochures and yellow pages ads (average cost per lead is $0.29!)
Breaking SEO Down
SEO consists of several key elements that work together to generate increases in a website's rankings, traffic and conversions: Keyword Selection, Copywriting, Link Building, HTML Optimization and Analytics. Let's take a look at each element in more detail:
Keyword Selection
The foundation of any SEO campaign is good keyword research. That's because targeting the right keywords is essential to getting your SEO on the right track. If your sell silver ladies watches, then you're going to want to rank in the search engines for the phrase "silver ladies watches" and other similar phrases. If your keyword research is off and you target the wrong keywords, then you may not get visitors who want what your site has to offer. That's why you need to make sure that your site is properly optimized for the most-searched-for keywords related to your business.
Copywriting
Getting potential customers to your site is only half the battle; you've got to convince them to buy. That's where persuasive copywriting comes in. Be sure to tell people why they need your products or services and include conversion points throughout the site. The search engines like content, so you also need to optimize your copy to include your keywords. This includes things like descriptive product pages, built-out content like biographies, news sections, etc. One important point to remember is to keep your most critical content "above the fold" - that's the area that's visible to your users before they have to scroll down.
Link Building
Think popularity contests ended in high school? Think again; you're not so lucky. Link building is like one big online popularity contest, and the search engines like the popular kids. Your success in the search engines depends, in part, on the amount of relevant incoming links to your site. Of course, having lots of good links also drives customers to your site, which is a good thing, too. Links can come in various sources, including directories, business partners, organizations, social media sites, and much, much more.
HTML Optimization
Title tags, header tags, Alt tags, Meta-descriptions -- the search engines want your site's HTML to be descriptive and clean. Search engines want to know exactly what your page is about; they don't want to sort through a bunch of extraneous code to figure it out. That's why you'll hear SEO types talk about the importance of having clean code and how to use CSS to make that happen.
Measuring Success
No SEO campaign is complete without analytics. After all, if you aren't measuring things like traffic, link popularity, and conversions, then how do you know if your SEO strategies are working? Programs like ClickTracks and Google Analytics help make the number-crunching a little easier. When analyzing an SEO campaign, it's important to only make one change at a time so that you know which changes are effective.
If you want to have an effective SEO campaign, you need to include each of the five SEO elements listed above. Keep in mind the information here just scratches the surface of these topics, and there are certainly other more advanced SEO strategies that can benefit your site as well. These building blocks, however, are the perfect way to get your SEO campaign started on the right track.

“Are You Prepared To Profit From Instant Web Traffic?”
From Instant Web Traffic?”
Warning -If you’re not serious about creating an online business that “makes your money
for you”, please stop reading this now!
Welcome to The Player’s Guide To Adwords Domination.
Before we start, I want to cut a deal with you. You see, I wrote this eBook out of a desire to
teach others how to create serious wealth using PPC advertising. I’ve poured a lot of effort
into this eBook, but only because I know 200% that this works. And what’s more, it should
work for anyone who uses these strategies for their own business.
And because I’ve worked so hard to create this, I want it to work for you . If you end up
“wasting” your time by reading this once and not applying it…well let’s just say we can’t
have any of that.
The only way we’re going to do this is if you promise to apply the money-making strategies
that I’m about to share with you. In return, you have my word that I will show you the exact
steps that I have taken to bring in instant traffic and build my online empire. I still get kicks
out of calling my business an empire.
Simple give and take (or show and tell).
To give you a quick idea of what I’m talking about (and to show you what’s easily
possible)…
This is from just one campaign I run on Google AdWords (more on this later) for just one of
my products for last month. This is for a $167 product. You’ll notice that the cost/conversion
is as low as $2.59! You’ll also see that almost all of the groups running have a clickthrough
rate higher than 5%. Some as high as 10%! The great thing about this, is once it’s up and
running, it literally take NO work to earn money via Adwords. It’s all on autopilot.
In the next few chapters, I will be teaching only those skills that you absolutely need to
know in order to create your own wealth (and then maybe take your own screenshots?)
like I have shown above.
Ready to roll? Let’s start with the lifeblood of any online business -website traffic -and how
you can create it instantly.
How to create instant website traffic?
While I was preparing my notes for this chapter, I started to think about what people want
to learn the most when it comes to making money online. What do you want to learn most
about making money online?
Is it:
•
How to make more sales?
•
How to create a winning product?
•
How to actually make a sale (the technical aspects of online business)?
The first thing I want to tell you is to start focusing on what is truly important in business,
whether it’s a brick-and-mortar store your grandpa owned or a snazzy new website you’ve
just started.
The first question that you should be asking (not the only question because there is more to
creating online wealth, but this is the most important point) is:
How do I drive more traffic to my website?
As an entrepreneur, your income will always be (beyond a certain point) a function of
traffic.
•
More people coming in to your store to look at antiques = more sales = more money.
•
More prospects getting your sales letter in their mailboxes = more sales = more
money.
•
More people visiting your online store… you get the picture.
Traffic is important. It’s the lifeblood that runs and determines the success of any business.
You may know it by different names, so to put it in another way:
More people seeing your sales pitch = more money coming into the bank. (granted your
sales pitch is something people want)
Doesn’t get simpler than that.
Note: In later chapters I’ll talk to you about the other
factors that determine your income -product value,
pricing and most importantly, converting this traffic
into enthusiastic, buying customers.
Back to the original question: How do you create instant website traffic?
Search engines are a good way to bring free traffic to your website -and while I’ve been
teaching business owners like you, how to bring in truckloads of free search engine traffic
for several years now, the problem with this method is that it takes time to rank highly in
Google and other search engines.
… And we all only have a limited amount of time. The challenge here is to create a
money-making machine that attracts prospects, reels them in, converts them into
customers and repeats the process all over again. Think of it as a revolving door prospects
just keep coming to your website and keep going out as happy customers
(hopefully).
The good news is that there already is such a system for bringing in instant traffic -pay-perclick
advertising (PPC). I’ll be talking exclusively about how you can use PPC advertising
via Google Adwords, to drive traffic to your website and convert that traffic into
customers.
The bad news is that 95 percent of PPC advertisers end up throwing several hundred
bucks down the hole before they even begin to understand how pay-per-click works.
What’s more, there are many business owners who, after being burned to the tune of
several thousands of dollars, give up on PPC advertising because they don’t get how it
works.
Imagine the pain of giving up a marketing opportunity like that, just because you were so
frustrated that nothing was working.
What I’ve done here is I’ve broken PPC advertising down for you in simple terms -and as
you will see in this chapter and the next, I’ll be taking you by hand and cutting through all
the mystery that surrounds AdWords (my ad network of choice) and pay-per-click
marketing.

How the Ads Get On Your Site
Once you join the AdSense program – and Google approves your site or sites,
which we’ll cover in detail shortly – the actual process of displaying ads on your
website is extremely simple. You are provided with a small HTML script, which
you can paste anywhere on your webpage. You may paste this code any number
of times and on multiple pages, and watch the ads get served! Google
automatically places AdWords ads that are most relevant, from its extensive
advertiser base. Google employs various sophisticated algorithms to determine
the relevancy of the ads to your content.
Before we get into how Google assesses sites, and whether a few or many
placements of that magic script will deliver optimum results, let’s review the
advantages of AdSense.
Advantages of the Google AdSense system
Google AdSense is simple to use and manage. Once approved, displaying ads
on your webpage does not take time and requires minimal technical knowledge.
Google AdSense is very smart about ad selection. The ads that are displayed are
only those that are relevant to your content, and Google has strict quality control
on the general quality of the ads.
Google AdSense uses text-only ads. Far from being low-tech, text ads are more
effective than flashy ads. The clickthrough rate of text ads is proven to be higher
than that of animated ads! More clicks equals more money, and text ads equals
more clicks. Also…text ads are very “low weight” and very fast loading. The
AdSense program will not slow your website, or your visitors, down. You can also
use graphic ads.

SEO for Adsense
Well the easiest way to do in order to get indexed properly and for the AdSense ads to be consistent with the content of the site itself. How do you do this? You can find a lot of effort you’re bound to have search engines themselves begin to have original and compelling content. So those are about the basic techniques in search engine optimization.
This takes a little while, but if, after waiting, you still can’t find your page that will drive visitors to your site more and more. The first thing you need to take care of is the actual source code and layout of your own. So here are a bunch of tips that come handy under every amateur or professional optimizer’s belt. This way it is a technique, better known as search-engine optimization or simply SEO. If you’ve been using Google AdSense on your pages target only one specific topic.
